Many of you will not have been to South Africa before and so we list below some of the most common questions we are being asked. We will keep adding to this list as you come up with new queries.
How do we get to South Africa
The two main international Airports as Cape Town(CPT) and Johannesburg (JNB) and there are many International Arlines that serve these airports with direct flights. (Please note that if you route via Johannesburg you will need a domestic flight to Cape Town)
UK - BA, Virgin, Norse
Europe - Swiss, Air France, KLM, Turkish, Lufthansa, TAP etc
Middle East - Emirates, Qatar, Etihad
USA - Delta, United
Far East - Singapore
Is it safe to visit South Africa?
This is a question asked by many and is mostly due to the spread of bad press through social media. We cannot guarantee safety, but South Africa is visited by around 10million foreigners every year and the overwhelming majority do not experience any security issues, just like visitors to any other country. Be sensible, don't go off the beaten track without a local guide and follow local advice.
How can i get from the airport to the Venue
The first option is to rent a vehicle at the Airport. All the main car hire companies are on site (Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Budget, Europcar etc. In South Africa we drive on the Left so please bear this in mind if you intend to rent a vehicle. If you want to use Google to find you way to teh event you may use this route which we have saved. https://maps.app.goo.gl/kHNv1QvXfT2p6KTg7
Public Transport is very limited in South Africa and we do not recommend using this to reach the venue
If you do not intend to rent a vehicle then please email us at david@df95racing.com so that we can help you make arrangements.
What weather can we expect while we are there
We can of course not guarantee the weather but the typical weather for late October is
Temperature - Lows of 10 degree C (50 F) to highs of 23 degree C (73 F)
Rainfall - Roughly 4 days per month
Wind - Primarily Easterly 20kph (13mph). (But please note Sailing Conditions below)
What sailing conditions can I expect.
There are significant local wind conditions on the dam which grealy affect the sailing.
Typically the mornings will see strong NNE Thermal winds often reaching D-rig strength. These often fade to light conditions around noon
In the afternoon the wind builds from the E or SE back up to C or D rig strength
As a result of the winds there can be significant chop on the water especially in the afternoon.
Do I have to bring my own boat or can I charter one
We are looking to offer a small number of charter boats taht can be hired for a fee, but we are not at a point of confirming that this is possible. We will confirm the position closer to the event.
If charter Boats are available
They will be on a first come-first serve basis
They will not include Rigs. you will need ot bring your own
They will not include Radio Gear
Damage will be at your cost
How can I find accommodation near the venue
Please see or separate page that covers this topic. https://www.df95racing.com/2026-df95-globals/accommodation-and-other-info
Will meals be supplied
Your Entry fee covers a meal at the opening and closing ceremonies and you will be able to purchase additional tickets for people traveling with you closer to the time
Other meals may also be included if we are able to bring sponsors on board to cover the cost. More details will be available closer to the time.
There is a Cafe on site who sell various cafe-style food and we also intend to have other catering facilities on site for the duration of the event
Are there Battery Charging facilities at the Venue
Yes, mains power is available in the boat storage/setup room but batteries must not be left on charge unattended or overnight
Mains power is 230v 50Hz. South Africa utilises 15A Type "M" (3 large round pins) plugs so international visitors will need a adapter.
