For those skippers who choose to use 4xAA Rechargeable NiMH batteries in the boat, they will only charge to 1.2v per cell, so 4x1.2 = 4.8v max and discharges to lower voltage with use, and sometimes will affect your Range because of this. Also, your Rudder or Sail winch may begin to operate with a jitter when at minimum charge. So many have upgraded to the LiFe 6.6v 850 mAh battery which maintains voltage all day, giving consistent range and operation.
Also 4xAA NiMH Batteries weigh approx. 90 to 100 grams, and the Life battery is approx. 56 grams and as low as 47 grams, where DF rules specify minimum battery weight is 45 grams.
However, storage of your Life batteries must take consideration of possible combustion. Suggested storage tips:
Never leave charging LiFe batteries unattended;
Place LiFe batteries in a secure receptacle when charging;
Batteries must always be kept unplugged from boats/receivers when not in use;
Best to store batteries in a fireproof bag or container.
