COMMODORE’S REPORT
It is a pleasure to report on the very successful 2024 year for the CRYC and DF Class.
Firstly, the membership has grown to 40 owners and 44 boats registered in the WC region. The establishment of the Whale Coast Buoys and growth at Theewaters has been giving impetus to the class. We expect this to continue. However, the water quality concerns at MAC and Sandvlei has had a negative impact on marketing and growing the Cape Town fleet.
It was with much sadness that two members, Pieter von Bredow and Ken Neil, passed away during the year. Condolences to their families. RIP.
Monthly sailing has been successfully held at La Bonheur Croc Farm dam and at Theewaters with the Whale Coast Buoys using the Bass Lake at Betty’s Bay. The sailing program is set up for a monthly Sunday at the Croc Farm and a monthly Sunday at Theewater. During the year various other venues were looked at but none proved suitable.
A very successful DF95 Nationals was held at Theewaters over 3 days in September. There were 32 entries with 2 of the entries being international sailors who had competed at the Fleetwood Globals. The SHRS system was used for the 16 qualification races and 5 races were sailed for the final series. Racing was extremely competitive and the overall winner was decided on the last race. The results proved exceptional for CRYC with all Gold fleet podiums and the 4th place to CRYC members. Congratulations Roy Gardener first, Sean Kavanagh second, Mike Kavanagh third and Barry Loubser fourth. In the Sliver fleet our rookie Nigel Smithie was second. In total 16 CRYC sailors completed. The evening entertainment was exceptional with each of the 3 evenings having its own theme. Special thanks to Jane Sharples, Carol Booth and the Club restaurant showing what can be expected at the 2026 Globals. The Club committee was bolstered for the Nationals and special thanks to them and Gary Grinstead, our RO, for organizing an excellent event.
The WC Regionals, a month later at the Croc Farm, was also very successful with 18 entries. The event also attracted sailors from EP and Garden Route. 32 races were completed in one fleet. Roy continued his domination of DF95 regattas winning comfortably. Brian Buddell was forth and Eric Marshal a deserved fifth overall. The Croc farm was a good venue with a welcoming restaurant.
Also very important, going forward in planning the 2026 Globals, for the Club to be in a strong financial position. The Club has reserves of R34 869 in the Trust Account and Cash. The Nationals and Regionals had surpluses of R5 934 and R181 respectively. The Club received R20 000.00 from the Overberg Sailing Federation. We budgeted to receive R12 000 and therefore ran the Regionals very frugally. However, the balance of our request, R8 000, was generously received after the Regionals. Dimension Tents, Jane Sharples, made up a quantity of transmitter covers and boat sleeves for which we paid for the material. These were sold and generated a surplus of R4 170.
The Club purchased a results laptop for R2 000.
Last year I reported on submitting a Bid to host the 2026 DF95 Globals in Cape Town. In May 2024 CRYC was informed that the Club had been awarded the event to be held at Theewaters 17 to 23 October 2026. Since the announcement there has been a lot of interest and we will expect full teams from UK, AUS, UK and Sweden. The first allocation will go out from the International Class Association in January 2026. A lot of discussions and work has started on the organisation. The Race Officer and International Judge have been approved. A marketing document, to be used for raising funds, has been drafted and is ready for discussion. An organsing committee and sub committees’ have being formulated together with the RSA DF Executive who have also had meetings with the DF ICA Executive.
The Club Committee has served its 2-year term and the members are available for reelection. Mathilda has stood down due to work commitments. Mathilda has been on the committee since inception and was instrumental in the success of the 2019 Nationals at MAC. I thank her for her dedication to the Class. Eric Marshall and Stuart Brown, who were co-opted for the Nationals, have put themselves forward for election.
SARSA the body is now fully constituted and the Club has paid up its arrear levies due from the past National and Regional events. David has accepted the WC representative role on the SARSA Executive.
The 2025 Sailing Season has kicked off and we hope it will be as successful as the last year in a similar format. The Sailing Calendar is on the CRYC website.
Thank you for everyone’s support this past year.

2023 ANNUAL COMMODORE’S REPORT
2023 is the 4th year since the reinstatement of CRYC in 2020 with the Club’s original Constitution dated April 2002. It has not been as successful a year as previous years. Mainly with MAC not being available with their weed issue. We tried to make use of Phisantekraal dam but we were not able to have regular sailing.
Club membership now stands at 33 boats/owners. 27 owners are active through CRYC, 6 are social sailors out of Sonstraal and we have 6 boats/sail numbers on record but they are not contactable.
Brian Beachamp has moved into the Betty’s Bay area and is setting up the Whale Coast group with 7 owners.
CRYC facilitates SAS membership for those not affiliated to other SAS clubs.
The 2023 WC SAS Regional Championship was held in October 2023 at Theewaters. It was a successful regatta with the dam being full after the September floods. There were 20 entries sailing in one fleet, 24 races and Roy Gardener was the winner. With the financial support from the Overberg Sailing Federation, CRYC was able to provide a free Saturday braai and generous prizes to all sailors. Sailmaker Justin Dent donated an A Rig suite for the In It to Win It draw.
In February the DF95 class were invited to participate in The Ocean Race festivities. A successful one-day regatta was held in the V&A with 10 boats participating.
A good contingent of Cape sailors attended the 3-day East v West regatta at Fairy Knowe, Wilderness. They had 25 boats racing and Roy won Gold fleet and Barry Loubser won Sliver.
Only 3 Cape sailors travelled to Midmar for the 2023 DF95 National Championship. It attracted a disappointing entry of 21sailors. However, it was great for Roy Gardener to retain his National Championship title. Barry Loubser won the Silver fleet
Club racing was held throughout the year at Theewaters, MAC and Phisantekraal with mixed success.
4 CRYC members were part of the RSA DF95 team participating at the 2023 DF95 Globals in the UK during May. It was a huge experience for the team competing in this highly competitive event attracting 78 sailors from 13 nations. Racing was run in 4 heats using the promotion relegation heat system. There is a full report on the Cape Radio Yachting website. Roy produced a noteworthy result finishing 17th overall and will receive his SAS Colours.
Another highlight of 2023 was Roy Gardener being awarded the prestigious South African Yachtsman of the Year Award for his remarkable results in 2022. It was an honour for our Club to nominate Roy for the Award and for the exposure it gave to Radio Sailing.
The Club’s finances remain extremely strong with R18 918 held in the SAS Trust Account and R3 484 held in cash. A copy of the Club’s Financial Statement is distributed to members. The generosity of the Overberg Sailing Federation with their grants received for the Regionals is much appreciated. The regatta was still in a position to make a surplus and provide free braai and salads to competitors and their partners.
The Club did not buy any assets, although with our hosting the Nationals in 2024 there is bound to be a need for equipment. CRYC are waiting for SARSA to meet its constitutional responsibilities. Until that is done we are not paying levies.
2024 – Looking to next season.
A sailing calendar has been drawn up with two sailing days per month. One around Cape Town for that group of sailors and one at Theewaters for those sailors. The calendar is posted on the CRYC Website and distributed with this report.
The Club is still in a venue predicament regarding MAC and its weed situation. Roy has been in contact with MAC and explained our concerns. The installation of a weed harvester has been delayed.
In the meantime, Michael Davies has been able to arrange sailing at La Bonheur Reptile Farm.
Roy and I have met with Phisantekraal and we are allowed to use the Dam when the Taaibosch organisation are there on a Sunday. We will get dates from Taaibosch and see how that can fit in with our dates.
Whale Coast will be arranging sailing down Kleinmond/Betty’s Bay area and would encourage Cape Town sailors to join in. We will get dates from Brian Beauchamp to include in our calendar.
The 2024 SAS DF95 Nationals and WC SAS Regional Championships will be held at Theewaters during September and October. Details of these regattas are posted on the CYRC website. The NoRs are being drawn up for submission to SAS for sanction.
This is a long shot but I have submitted a proposal to the City to develop a water park area which we can use as a permanent home for our racing. Also to promote midweek DF95 social sailing and racing.
2026
At the 2023 Globals I did a presentation and distributed flyers at the South African braai evening to promote our regattas in one of the World’s top tourist destinations. Out of that I was approached about hosting the 2026 Globals. On behalf of our Club I have submitted a bid to the RSA National Executive and this bid has been forwarded to the International Class Association. A decision is expected early March 2024.
I appreciate the effort and support of the Committee, who are in the middle of their two-year term. I have also approach a few members to join the Nationals regatta organising committee. They have indicated their willingness to join and will help greatly to making our regattas a huge success.
